Dorita Savert
In her paintings and drawings, Dorita Savert explores the field of tension between beauty and the pathetically kitsch. Closer inspection of what at first appear to be figurative, poetic landscapes and flower still lifes reveals a second layer. The viewer is dared to go on a journey through many places and times. The fictional world of the work may be read as an unprosaic homage to nature. In some works details of flowers are enlarged enormously while in other works they are reduced to a minimum. Parts of old maps or diaries are added and there arises an interface where history, science and human emotion come together.
Nothing is what it seems in this work. Questions are asked about how we observe, how we translate these observations and, thus, how we perceive.
With titles that refer to the cosmetic industry, Dorita Savert presents beauty, ideal beauty, transience and relativity. The artist subtly comments on the way society today views the ideal of beauty. All this takes shape in her work in a paradoxical and idiosyncratic manner, imbued with a subtle sense of humour.
